Trailer for the film William S. Burroughs: A Man Within, a feature-length independent documentary by Chicago Director Yony Leyser, in collaboration with BulletProof Film, Inc. The film features never before seen footage of William S. Burroughs, as well as exclusive interviews with his closest friends and colleagues including John Waters, Genesis P-Orridge, Laurie Anderson, Peter Weller, David Cronenberg, Iggy Pop, Gus Van Sant, Sonic Youth, Anne Waldman, George Condo, Hal Willner, James Grauerholz, Amiri Baraka, Jello Biafra, V. Vale, David Ohle, Wayne Propst, Dr. William Ayers, Diane DiPrima, Donovan, Dean Ripa (the world's largest poisonous snake collector), and many others, with narration by actor Peter Weller, and soundtrack by Sonic Youth. The film investigates the life of legendary beat author and American icon, William S. Burroughs. Born the heir of the Burroughs adding machine estate, he struggled throughout his life with addiction, control systems and self. He was forced to deal with the tragedy of killing his wife and the repercussions of neglecting his son. His novel, Naked Lunch, was one of the last books to be banned by the U.S. government. Allen Ginsberg and Norman Mailer testified on behalf of the book. The courts eventually overturned their decision in 1966, ruling that the book had important social value. It remains one of the most recognized literary works of the 20th century. William Burroughs was one of the first to cross the dangerous boundaries of queer and drug culture in the 1950s, and write about his experiences. Eventually he was hailed the godfather of the beat generation and influenced artists for generations to come. However, his friends were left wondering, did William ever find happiness? This extremely personal documentary breaks the surface of the troubled and brilliant world of one of the greatest authors of all time. William S. Burroughs: A Man Within is the first and only posthumous documentary about this legendary figure.

Take a tour of the One Wilshire Meet-Me Room...

LOS ANGELES -- In the bowels of the world's most densely populated Meet-Me room -- a room where over 260 ISPs connect their networks to each other -- a phalanx of cabling spills out of its containers and silently pumps the world's information to your computer screen.

If this facility went down, most of California and parts of the rest of the world would not be able to connect to the internet.

The Fire at the Brown's Ferry Nuclear Power Station

How a candle caused a nuclear emergency...

At noon on March 22, 1975, both Units 1 and 2 at the Brown's Ferry plant in Alabama were operating at full power, delivering 2200 megawatts of electricity to the Tennessee Valley Authority.

Just below the plant's control room, two electricians were trying to seal air leaks in the cable spreading room, where the electrical cables that control the two reactors are separated and routed through different tunnels to the reactor buildings. They were using strips of spongy foam rubber to seal the leaks. They were also using candles to determine whether or not the leaks had been successfully plugged -- by observing how the flame was affected by escaping air.

The electrical engineer put the candle too close to the foam rubber, and it burst into flame.

The resulting fire, which disabled a large number of engineered safety systems at the plant, including the entire emergency core cooling system (ECCS) on Unit 1, and almost resulted in a boiloff/meltdown accident, demonstrates the vulnerability of nuclear plants to "single failure" events and human fallibility.

You've come a long way, baby!

As the years have gone by, we've gotten better at this.

We had become increasingly frustrated with our hosting provider, who we have been using since spring of 2005.  I decided to switch the tonekids empire over to bluehost.com.  We'll see how they work out.  Along with the laborious task of migrating over everyone's tonekids email accounts,  I decided to try out a different CMS for the website called Joomla.

On Friday, I managed to parlay my increased understanding of SQL and databases into a migration of the old dragonfly data over to the new system.  This morning, I managed to find the old-old "PHP Nuke" database, which went into mothballs when we moved into this house in the spring of 2005.  It was in a tarball on the LINUX box in the basement.  Since I had one success in migrating SQL dumps, I went and and migrated that very old stuff over, too.  I remember when doktorbrown was irritated that I had started a new content management system and lost the old stuff.  He was right.  I just didn't know at the time how to use PHP and SQL well enough to migrate the data over.

Well, we're over the learning curve now.  Every story ever posted to tonekids.com is now available here.  All of the data has come home.

If you jump to the last page of articles, which you can do at the bottom of this page, you can follow the history of tonekids.com.  Find it amusing that promises of RSS feeds and broadcasts have not yet been fulfilled.

I fear that a lot of the pre-2005 tonekids activity has been lost.  There is a lot of uncategorized material lurking in the CDs, DVDs, and old hard drives sitting around the secret lab here.  Perhaps a history can be pieced together.

We hope that we can carry forward, and continue the dreams and aspirations.

I hope that good things lie in the future.

P.S.  That is Aunt Louise looking at you from the header bar.  I am looking for the picture of her wearing the prototype alpha goggles.
