Earth's Artificial Ring: Project West Ford

In May 1963, the US Air Force launched 480 million tiny copper needles that briefly created a ring encircling the entire globe. They called it Project West Ford. The engineers behind the project hoped that it would serve as a prototype for two more permanent rings that would forever guarantee their ability to communicate across the globe.

From the invention of the first practical videotape recorder by Ampex Corporation in 1956 until approximately 1979 virtually all broadcast television was recorded on a format known as Quadraplex or Quad. Of the tens of thousands of recordings that were made during that period of time, very few remain. Of those that do remain, some historical recordings like the famous Nixon-Khrushchev "Kitchen Debate" are in questionable condition. This paper will explore a few of the reasons for the large loss of these early videotape recordings and briefly discuss efforts to assemble a "restored version" of the Nixon-Khrushchev "Kitchen Debate" videotape recorded on July 25, 1959.

Rudy Ray Moore 1927-2008 RIP

Rudy Ray Moore, comedian, singer, actor and film producer died of complications from diabetes in Toledo, Ohio on October 19, 2008. In 1975 he took on the character Dolemite, the ‘uniquely articulate pimp’ in a film by the same name and followed up with a sequel film The Human Tornado.
