China sent a bunch of taikonauts into orbit aboard Shenzhou 7, and even had a press confererence of Olympic proportion (prerecorded just in case ya know...), and oh yeah, a spacewalk. They also plan to do the, uh, other thing...but hey India is working on that game too because, "Indians are fascinated by Moon from ancient days and now 21st century india is ready to land on moon! Chandrayaan is the mission towords that dream...."

But not to be outdone, a privately funded company in Hawthorne, California, SpaceX sent their own Falcon 1 craft into orbit. See, capitalism does work occasionally.... :P Just don't get me started on Credit Default Swaps, AIG, or the meltdown. However, Gilani is one of the few pundits that actually seems to be making some sense in all of this...look something shiny.... 8O

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), a 27 kilometer (17 mile) long particle accelerator straddling the border of Switzerland and France, is nearly set to begin its first particle beam tests. The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) is preparing for its first small tests in early August, leading to a planned full-track test in September - and the first planned particle collisions before the end of the year. The final step before starting is the chilling of the entire collider to -271.25 C (-456.25 F)

The port’s surveillance system, installed with funds from the National Nuclear Security Administration, an agency within the Department of Energy, wasn’t yet in place, so the container was loaded and sent to sea before it could be identified. After American and Sri Lankan inspectors hurriedly checked camera images at the port, they concluded that the suspect crate might be on any one of five ships—two of which were steaming toward New York...

Those who came of age during the era of Three Mile Island and Chernobyl are probably too young to remember the happy days when "our friend the atom" promised electricity too cheap to meter and cars that would run forever without a fill-up. With atom-powered subs like the Nautilus cruising under the polar icecap in the mid-1950s, could anyone doubt that atom-powered rocketships, airplanes, and even automobiles would be far behind?
